How to Choose a Coloured Gemstone

Coloured gemstones are chosen differently from diamonds. With a diamond, the language is largely technical. With a sapphire, an emerald or a spinel, the first question is simply how the colour behaves.

**Colour before everything.** Look at hue, saturation and tone in daylight and in warm indoor light. A stone that stays alive in both is a stone you will wear.

**Cut for life, not for symmetry alone.** A well-cut coloured stone distributes colour evenly and avoids windowing, where light passes straight through the centre.

**Character over perfection.** Many coloured gemstones are naturally included. Inclusions that do not threaten durability are part of the stone's identity.

**Certification and disclosure.** Ask for an independent laboratory report, and for clear disclosure of any treatment. Origin may matter for value, but it should never replace your own response to the stone.
